Cold plates
Cofan’s cold plate is a specialized heat exchanger designed to cool electronic components or systems by transferring heat away from them and dissipating it into a cooling fluid, typically water or a water-glycol mixture. Constructed from materials like aluminum or copper with high thermal conductivity, a cold plate features a flat, rectangular metal plate with internal channels or passages etched or machined into it. These channels allow the cooling fluid to circulate, facilitating the transfer of heat from the electronic component to the fluid.
Operating on the principle of the cold plate makes direct contact with the heat-generating component or system. Heat is then transferred from the component to the plate, and subsequently, to the cooling fluid flowing through the internal channels. As the fluid absorbs heat, it increases in temperature and flows away from the heat source to dissipate the heat elsewhere, such as through a radiator or heat exchanger.
There are various types of cold plates, including formed tube cold plates, tube-in-plate cold plates, manifold cold plates, and hybrid cold plates, each with unique designs and fluid flow configurations. Cold plates find widespread applications in electronic systems and devices where efficient cooling is critical, such as power electronics, high-performance computing systems, laser diode cooling, and aerospace and defense applications.

What are cold plates?
Liquid cooling, also known as cooling with liquid, is a very effective way to remove high heat loads from components. This is a natural evolution beyond air cooling where either due to thermal requirements or footprint requirements. A liquid cooling loop for contact cooling typically consists of a cold plate, pump, heat exchanger, and pipes or hoses. COFAN Thermal’s custom liquid cooling component cold plates are compatible with water and a range of coolants.
